Reality TV Breeds Narcisism

By Lisa E. Scott | June 8, 2009

One of our messageboard members, Finallydone, made two comments on our Vain Forum that really struck a chord with me and I must respond:

“Part of the problem with Narcissism in America is this type of junk reality programming.”

I couldn’t agree with you more. Reality television is a big reason the younger generation is so much more narcissistic than we are. I grew up watching Family Ties, Growing Pains and the Cosby Show. Shows that promoted good values and taught important life lessons. Remember “The Facts of Life” sitcom?!

Today’s youth are raised on reality television that consists of nothing more than people backstabbing and competing against each other to get ahead. What does this teach our youth? It teaches them if you don’t put yourself first, someone will stab you in the back. It breeds selfish narcissistic behavior, people! It is so unhealthy!

I watched Nightline tonight and it featured the success of The Real Housewives Series on Bravo. Talk about unapologetic narcissism at its finest. Puhlease! ABC reported that this series, with the most recent one being the Real Housewives of New Jersey, has become “must watch television” for the most educated/wealthiest population in America. Oh, it makes me want to cry. The most educated population in America wants to watch Beverly and Kelly rip each other apart and humiliate each other on national television?! I just don’t get it.

“Whatever happened to quality entertainment and true respect for actual talent?”

Again, I couldn’t agree with you more here. People used to be gain notoriety for a talent, such as being an artist, musician or great actor. Having such talents deservedly brought one fame.

Unfortunately, this is no longer the case. People are famous regardless of whether they have a talent. They can become recognized by being obnoxious (i.e. Ann Coulter) and crude (i.e. Howard Stern) or simply for spending daddy’s money. Yes, I’m talking about Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian. What talent brought these ladies recognition?

No talent, they have none. They are simply famous for their family’s wealth. Oh wait, I think each of them made a porno with their boyfriend, didn’t they? Another healthy example for our youth deserved of much recognition, fame and notoriety, don’t you think? Excuse me while I go vomit now.
